You might like to know this: The subject really is Boss of a station (ranch) in the Cape York. As it's a tropical area, his cattle are really the tick-resistant Brahmans. He wanted his portrait to form part of my Waltzing Matilda series, which is set in the 1890s. So I checked with the Department of Primary Industry to see which breeds were run there in that era. As I feared, the answer was: Hereford, Poll Hereford, and Shorthorn. No Asian breeds. But this guy's heart is as big as he is, and he good-naturedly agreed to have his Brahmans turn into Herefords. To compensate, I put his own brand on the old bull watching the cutting-out of the calf, and put the stockmen on two of his favourite quarter horses. (Their photos were just side-on, standing still. But I set a stock saddle on a stool in my studio, settled myself in it and imagined myself into the job. So I was able to translate the photos into action. I'm glad nobody could see me while this was in process!) The palomino was his own favourite mount. Warren is wearing his own "dinner hobbles" belt and his quart pot with its leather holder is clipped to his saddle. But he wears American-style stirrups - particular to him, and they fit well with the character in my book.
